On March 4, 1921, the United States Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American serviceman from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater. On November 11, 1921, the unknown soldier brought back from France was interred below a three-level marble tomb. The bottom two levels are six granite sections each and the top at least nine blocks with a rectangular opening in the center of each level through which the unknown remains were placed through the tomb and into the ground below. A stone slab, rather than marble, covers the rectangular opening.[3][4][5]
A Tomb of the Unknown Soldier or Tomb of the Unknown Warrior is a monument dedicated to the services of an unknown soldier and to the common memories of all soldiers killed in war. Such tombs can be found in many nations and are usually high-profile national monuments. Throughout history, many soldiers have died in war with their remains being unidentified. Following World War I, a movement arose to commemorate these soldiers with a single tomb, containing the body of one such unidentified soldier.

The Tombs of the Unknown Soldiers typically contain the remains of a soldier who is unidentified (or "known but to God" as the stone is sometimes inscribed).[6] These remains are considered impossible to identify, and so serve as a symbol for all of a country's unknown dead wherever they fell in the war being remembered. The anonymity of the entombed soldier is the key symbolism of the monument; it could be the tomb of anyone who fell in service of the nation, and therefore serves as a monument symbolizing all of the sacrifices.
The tomb is now the resting place of three unidentified U.S. service members. More broadly, it represents all missing and unknown service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. Through its more than 100 years of existence, it has offered comfort for many who lost loved ones whose remains are missing or interred in foreign lands.
The push was spearheaded by U.S. Rep. Hamilton Fish Jr., a WWI veteran from New York. He "introduced legislation in December 1920 for an American unknown soldier to be interred in a new tomb," according to Arlington National Cemetery. "This Unknown would represent the nearly 2,000 unidentified American soldiers buried in Europe."
We acknowledge our unidentified fallen heroes with a special place of reverence in our most honored of burial grounds: the Tomb of the Unknowns (also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) in Arlington National Cemetery (ANC), where in 1921 we first laid to rest "In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God." Although we cannot inter all of our unidentifed war dead in Arlington, we nonetheless honor them all by including the remains of three representative soldiers of unknown identity who died in foreign wars (World War I, World War II, and the Korean War) there. (Beginning in 1984 the tomb also held the remains of a serviceman killed in the Vietnam War, but after DNA testing confirmed his identity in 1998, his remains were disinterred and returned to his family. The crypt of the Vietnam Unknown has remained empty ever since.)

Twenty years ago this month, the remains of the Vietnam soldier at the tomb were exhumed for mitochondrial DNA testing. Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie was subsequently identified as the soldier, and he was later buried in St. Louis. The Vietnam crypt now sits empty and since DNA samples are obtained from soldiers today, it's unlikely we'll have another unknown soldier after Vietnam.
